I wouldn’t normally post a gallery of images that is just three photos long. It’s just not done. I’ve made an exception for Jesy Fortino, aka Tiny Vipers who unexpectedly blew my mind on a mild Tuesday Auckland evening. We only got three photos because the gig was the kind that didn’t really suit having lenses thrust on it.
First up there was this two piece who set the record for hearfelt-earnestness and shyness. So beautiful they didn’t even announce their name at the end of their set, or at the beginning either. Sail on! Nameless Band. Straight after, Jesy took the stage and enraptured the crowd – it was pretty full, and it was Tuesday – building and flowing and washing us with her steel string that seemed at time to be played by ore than one set of hands. So perfect, so sublime and understated, it wasn’t until the very last song that she actaully projected her voice and sang >>out>> which made me catch my breath anew, wondrous that the whole set had been performed so powerfully at what was clearly a fraction of the available volume.
After shows across Australia and NZ it’s very little wonder that an encore was not forthcoming. The crowd was too inebriated by the music to shout or wreck the atmosphere. So we made our way home in a rich and beautiful world. Thanks so much everyone who brought Tiny Vipers to us.
